About The Schoolhouse

Black and white photo of children posing on American Valley School steps.

History

Originally built in 1900, this one-room schoolhouse educated generations of students until its closure in 1967. As one-room schools across Marin and Sonoma Counties were phased out, the American Valley School—now known as the Valley Ford Schoolhouse—was entrusted to the Gold Ridge Resource Conservation District. For over 20 years, the Valley Ford Volunteer Fire Department lovingly managed and preserved the building. In 2024, local residents Craig and Michelle Machado purchased the schoolhouse with a vision to restore and revitalize the historic community landmark.
